Abstract

Complexities of science and research has necessitated the formation of editorial boards including experts to help the editor. The secretariat allots a number for future correspondence to every submitted paper and promptly acknowledges receiving it. It also demands compliance with instructions for the contributors. Duly complied papers are blinded and usually sent to two peer reviewers for their evaluation. The need for blinding is debatable and all journals don’t blind the papers. The peer reviewers are acknowledged experts in the topic of the research study. Their comments have to be objective based on every aspect of the paper. The peer reviewers’ job is to help the authors to improve their paper by their suggestions and comments. Author’s response is sent to the concerned expert for his reassessment. At no stage the author should rewrite the paper or add more data unless asked for. Concurrently, two members of the editorial board also review the paper critically in all its aspects. If necessary the paper is also sent to experts in related specialties or super specialties and a biostatistician. Their comments and suggestions are similarly dealt with. The paper now goes to the editor for his decision regarding acceptance or rejection. The rejection is supported by justifiable reasons based on assessments received by him. The whole process may take 4-6 months. Most journals allow the author to appeal against the rejection. The appeal must be based scientific reasoning. The paper is reassessed by the editorial board usually after obtaining the opinion of new peer reviewers if considered necessary.
