Abstract

Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery as a specialty is relatively new, but the art has been practiced from time immemorial. Its present and rapidly evolving form is a product of developments in the basic discipline, an understanding of periorbital anatomy and disease, and improvement in surgical equipments and techniques. The decision regarding the management of congenital ptosis depends mainly on the age of the patient and the magnitude of functional and cosmetic deficit. Eyelid reconstruction is indicated for eyelid colobomas that are congenital, or acquired following trauma or tumor resection. Ectropion of the eyelid is defined as an evertion of the eyelid margin away from the eyeball. Entropion is the inward turning of the eyelid margin. It is most commonly seen as an aging phenomenon produced by the attenuation or detachment of the lower eyelid retractor and associated with horizontal eyelid laxity. The diagnosis of lacrimal system disorders requires a meticulous history taking, and a thorough clinical evaluation. Ancillary tests of lacrimal function, when properly and selectively applied, aid in the diagnosis. Tearing, the most frequent symptom is probably the most nonspecific.
