Abstract

Ocular trauma is the most important preventable cause of blindness in all age groups. It is the cause of blindness or partial loss of vision in more than half a million people worldwide. The National Eye Institute Trauma System Registry (NETSR) report on penetrating eye injuries noted that 83% of the patients were men and the median age was 27 years, ranging from 1 to 92 years of age. Posterior segment trauma is the most common causes of severe visual loss after eye trauma. Over the past few years, there is an improvement in the management of ocular trauma cases due to advancement in imaging techniques, instrumentation and observation systems. Vitreoretinal surgery for complications of ocular trauma has evolved greatly over the years due to a better understanding of the pathophysiology and pathoanatomy of vitreoretinal complications of eye trauma. The NETSR has reported that 22% of 2,939 cases of penetrating eye injury were the result of assault, while 21% of the injuries occurred at the worksite. In the worksite related cases, the most common causes of injury were projectiles, sharp objects, blunt objects and blasts. A study by Dandona and associates found that ocular trauma affected 1 in 25 people in the urban population and 1 in 167 was estimated to be blind in at least one eye due to trauma. The majority of trauma resulting in blindness occurred during childhood and young adulthood, usually while playing, was higher in males and in the lower socioeconomic group.
