Abstract

Method derived from a Greek word ‘methodos’ pursuit of knowledge. It means to particular procedure for accomplishing or approaching something. It is a systematic procedure involved in the investigation of facts and concepts. In any science, several different methods of study must sometimes be applied to a problem before all the pieces fit together properly. Each method contributes in its own way to the final solution. In planning a study, the scientist attempts to select the method or methods most appropriate to the particular problem under consideration. Every science employs methods peculiar to its subject matter. As the subject matter changes so the methods. For example, physics studies physical things. These physical things are gross and can be handled with instruments. Hence physics uses experimental method. Psychology is the science of behavior. Behavior includes inner processes and experiences along with external and overt activities. Inner processes and experiences cannot be handled with instruments. Hence psychology uses introspection method also. Besides introspection, psychology uses observation and experimental methods which are widely used in other sciences.
