Abstract

The physiological sensitivity of the organism sets a basic limit to know of our surroundings, our observation of the world is also dependent upon the closely related processes of attention and perception. Attention, a process of psychological selectivity, involves an adjustment of the body and its sense organs, clear and vivid consciousness, and a set towards action. The postural aspect of attention corresponds to the orienting or attitudinal reflex discovered in lower animals by Pavlov. Experiments have shown that the central nervous system selects some stimuli and suppresses reaction to others. People have been dealing so far with the various ways by which they have contact with the outside world. At every moment numerous stimuli from the outside environment come and call for our attention. But in fact, they cannot attend to all these. They always select. This selection is based on some conditions which will be mentioned presently. At any moment a certain area of the environment is thus selected. This area of which they are aware is called the field of consciousness. It can be quite rich and complicated. Even when reading book, we may be aware of the temperature, some noise that is heard outside, the contents in the room such as furniture, books, etc. and so many other things. All these form the field of our consciousness at the moment. But we are not aware of all of them with the same degree of intensity. We are most aware of what we read (provided you are really reading). This particular part of the field is called the “focus of consciousness”. Experts have studied these factors under two categories, called the objective factors and the subjective factors. These are also called conditions of attention. By objective factors we mean the qualities and characteristics of the objects which make us attend to them. By subjective factors we mean the interests, habits and attitudes that we have developed in the course of our life. The student who hears the lecture selects professor’s voice out of the noise in the surroundings. While a student is attentively hearing the lecture, one can very well note his physical set which also indicates his mental set. Receptor adjustment, bodily adjustment, postural adjustment, muscular tension and central nervous adjustments are typical of bodily sets in attention. Thus, in brief, attention can be defined as a process which compels the individual to select some particular stimulus according to his interest and attitude out of the multiplicity of stimuli present in the environment.
