Abstract

Osmolarity means osmotic pressure exerted by the number of moles per liter of solution. Osmolality is the osmotic pressure exerted by the number of moles per kg of solvent. Major determinant factor of osmolality is sodium. Normal plasma osmolality varies from 285 – 295 milliOsmoles/kg. Major regulatory factors of sodium and water balance are aldosterone, ADH and rennin—angiotensin system.
