Abstract

Isotopes are the same element having the same atomic number (protons) but different mass number (varying number of neutrons). Spontaneous degradation of nucleus and transmutation of one element to another with consequent emission of rays or particles is known as radioactivity. The total body content of a particular substance can be quantitated by the isotope dilution technique. Applications of radioisotopes in medicine include radioimmunoassays, thyroid uptake studies, blood flow studies, bone and kidney scanning, radiotherapy in cancers. Radiations affect mucous membrane, skin, blood cells, and reproductive organs and can damage DNA preventing mitosis.
