Various physiological mechanisms that govern electrocardiographic deflections are electrodes and the lead system, action potential, cardiac vector and the electrical axis and electrical rotation of the heart. Natural pacemakers, heart rate, electrocardiographic pattern in infants and adults and various conditions associated with electrocardiographic variants are discussed in this book. Various clinical conditions may lead to atrial hypertrophy, ventricular hypertrophy and biatrial- and biventricular hypertrophy. The sinus node is a naturally occurring dominant pacemaker of the heart. The abnormality in the conduction system may lie at either levels of SA node, internodal bundles in the atria, AV node, bundle of His and Purkinje system of the ventricles. Myocardial ischemia and myocardial infarction are the manifestations of coronary artery disease. Congenital heart disease includes atrial septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, tricuspid atresia whereas heredofamilial disorders are prolonged Q-T syndromes, accelerated conduction and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Rheumatic heart disease, myocarditis, pericarditis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases are some of the acquired heart diseases. Several disorders of cardiac rhythm, artificial pacemakers of the heart and various heart conditions originating from miscellaneous disorders like endocrine imbalance, poisons, drugs, cerebrovascular and neuromuscular disorders are described.
