Abstract

The biomechanical properties, including the load carrying characteristics and the motion of each level, were discussed and alteration in biomechanical characteristics due to infectious diseases of the spine was reviewed. The vertebral body transmits most of the load applied to the vertebral column. Since most spinal infections predominantly affect the vertebral body, significant damage can lead to spinal instability and deformity. Early diagnosis and appropriate management of spinal infections can prevent catastrophic complications. This also underscores the importance of protecting the posterior elements during surgical management of spinal infections as they may be only intact structures supporting the spine. These biomechanical concepts should be considered while planning management in patients with spinal infections. On the basis of the biomechanics of spinal infections, reconstruction of the unstable spine, and prevention or correction of the deformities should be planned.
