Abstract

The bony spinal column protects the delicate spinal cord. Any patient sustaining trauma may have a spinal column injury, which must be recognized early and treated appropriately. A complete spinal evaluation inclu-des history of the circumstances and mode of injury, a complete systemic examination and appropriate radiological imaging. Spinal imaging refers to the evaluation of the spine by any of the various imaging modalities and techniques, or by any combination of such techniques for determining the presence, location, extent, and nature of injury to the spinal column. Precise identification, characterization and planning management of spinal injury is possible only with appropriate spinal imaging. Spinal imaging is required in the following cases: (i) Any acutely injured patients with back or neck pain or clinical signs of spine or spinal cord injury, (ii) All noncommunicative patients in whom the account of the mechanism of injury is consistent with spine or spinal cord injury. The efficient and economic application of diagnostic imaging of spinal trauma requires a thorough knowledge of the indications for and limitations of the various imaging techniques available and the sequence in which they should be applied.
