Abstract

Dental cements are the materials made from two components, powder and liquid, mixed together to form a rigid solid mass. They are either resin cements or acid-base cements. In the latter the powder is a basic metal oxide or silicate and the liquid is acidic. An acid base reaction occurs with the formation of a metal salt which acts as the cementing matrix. Dental cements can be used as temporary and permanent restorations, for temporary and permanent luting, as root canal sealer and for pulp protection in form of bases, liners / pulp capping agents. The clinician must make sure to follow the manufacturer\'s directions for each type of cement, in terms of mixing, using the correct ratios and subjecting it to the correct temperatures. There are different types of dental cements like zinc-oxide eugenol, zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate, glass ionomer and composite resin.
