Pelvic organ prolapse is one of the most common reasons for hysterectomy in postmenopausal women. Some degree of prolapse occurs in 50% of parous women but only 20% of them are symptomatic. The exact prevalence is difficult to determine due to the differences in age, race, study population and examination techniques. In the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study, incidence of uterine prolapse, cystocele and rectocele were reported to be 14.2%, 34.2% and 18.3% respectively in patients with intact uterus. The prevalence of cystocele and rectocele in women who had hysterectomy was 62.9% and 18.3% respectively.
