Abstract

Hematological disorders in pregnancy constitute nutritional deficiency anemias, hemoglobinopathies, sickle cell anemia and thrombocytopenia. Nutritional deficiency anemia is prevalent in 60–90 % of pregnant women. Causes, diagnostic criteria, grading, maternal and fetal complications of iron and folic acid, vitamin B12 deficiency are discussed in the chapter followed by prophylactic and therapeutic treatment and obstetric management. Pathogenesis of various types of Thalassanemia, sickle cell anemia and thrombocytopenia, their clinical presentations, diagnostic method and obstetric management is well covered in the chapter. Role of blood transfusion in different hematological disorders is clearly defined.
