Abstract

Untreated thyroid dysfunction can result in adverse maternal, fetal and neonatal sequelae. Physiology of maternal and fetal thyroid is summarized in the chapter followed by specific problem of hyper and hypothyroidism in pregnancy. Hyperthyroidism is mainly caused by Grave’s disease. High index of suspicion of hyperthyroidism, evaluation of serial thyroid function test, choice and dose adjustment of antithyroid drugs, and serial maternal, fetal and neonatal evaluation are important considerations, which are well covered in the chapter. Diagnosis of hypothyroidism by thyroid function test and treatment by thyroxine replacement are principle of management. Management of solitary thyroid nodule and postpartum thyroiditis is concised in the chapter.
