Abstract

Iris anatomy and function can be altered by congenital or degenerative conditions, as well as following trauma or certain infections, inflammation or toxicity. Congenital iris anomaliesare caused by the embryonic fissure closure defect which can cause typicaliris colobomas. They can be partial or complete. The capsulozonular complex affections although not routine, are observed with a relative frequency. The presence of anomalies in the position or form of the crystalline lens as well as in the integrity of the zonular complex still constitutes a challenge for the surgeon.
