Abstract

Until the availability of multifocal IOLs one had to be content with monofocal IOL for children. The use of multifocal IOL started with Allergan Array IOL, and then came Prezi, ReZoom, and ReStor IOL. The acceptability of these was good and gave good intermediate vision. Before the placement of IOL, preoperative routine procedure is done and anesthesia is selected. Both inhalational and intravenous general anesthetic techniques have been used successfully for pediatric cataract surgery. Isoflurane and Propofol are the commonly used anesthesia for child cataract surgery. Oculocardiac reflex should be watched for; if it occurs atropine should be given. Surgical procedure should be done carefully, the tendency of rhexis is to increase so, plan for less because it invariably increases. Coupled with the ability to achieve the level of accuracy are the advent of the newer more sophisticated computer controlled machines and the availability of alternative modalities.
