Abstract

The management of cataract surgery in children is a more complex process than in adult patients who have previously developed presumably good visual acuity but later was diminished by opacification of the lens. In children, the visual system is in a constant process of development and will be completely developed until the age of 8 years. The aim of cataract surgery in children is performed in two steps: first to clear the visual axis in order to achieve the best possible visual acuity and second, to promote the development of binocular visual function. A visual acuity of 0.32 or less would suggest that cataract surgery is indicated. The surgery procedure is started with pupil dilation. Cataract Surgery is done without placement of an intraocular lens or with lens implantation. Secondary IOL implantation in children is common because many children will have acongenital complete that requires removal at an age where implantation of a lens is not commonly performed. The technique for implanting a secondary IOL is similar for PMMA or the foldable lens.
