Abstract

Eyelids are essential in maintaining the integrity of the ocular system as it helps to keep the cornea moist by distribution of tears and protects eyeball against injury. The eyelid abnormalities are broadly divided into two groups congenital and acquired. Congenital eyelid disorders may be isolated or may be associated with other facial or systemic anomalies. The important ones are cryptophthalmos, coloboma, ankyloblepharon, congenital ectropion, entropion, epiblepharon, distichiasis, euryblepharon, telecanthus and congenital ptosis. The treatment in most of the cases is surgical and skin grafting. In congenital tumors pigmented lesions, dermoid and epimedium cyst and angiomatous tumors are common. Acquired abnormalities of eyelid can be due to eyelid trauma and its sequelae or inflammatory and infective disorders. Eyelid trauma is commonly encountered following birth injuries, automobile accidents, fall, sports injuries, child abuse and chemical injuries. Blepharitis, stye, chalazion, internal hordeolum, molluscum contagiosum are the inflammatory disorders. They are managed by hot fomentation, antibiotic drops or creams, analgesics. Patient’s cooperation is a limitation for adequate assessment in pediatric age group. Careful planning of management is required. Cosmetic consideration is also critical for child’s psychological development.
