Abstract

Same-surgeries, on the same patient, sequentially, in one sitting cataract surgery (SBCS) is the procedure of performing both cataract surgeries, on the same day sequential, immediately consecutive, or simultaneous bilateral, cataract patient, sequentially, in one sitting. This procedure is not preferred by the ophthalmologist as this give rise to many complications. Simultaneous bilateral pediatric cataract surgery (SBPCS) can also be advised when follow-up care is a significant hardship for the parents. Advantages of SBPCS include reduction in mortality and morbidity associated with risk of two sessions of general anesthesia, fewer hospital visits and less surgical stress. The disadvantages of SBPCS include concerned with the risk of bilateral endophthalmitis. SBPCS has been recommended in infants with bilateral congenital cataracts who are rated with an ASA physical status greater than 2 or generally those who are at higher risk for anaesthesia-related complications. There should be a joint decision between the anaesthesia team, the ophthalmic surgeon and the parents if this surgery is desired.
