Abstract

The management of cataract surgery in children is a more complex process than in adult patients. Children’s eyes are different from adult eyes in several ways they are smaller at birth, the steepness of the corneal curvature, the size of the lens also varies. The visual system in children younger than 8 years is in a process of development. In adults, cataract surgery is associated with vision restoration. In children, the visual system is undergoing development and this need to be facilitated.Cataracts may be congenital and present at birth or develop later during childhood. Often children have a propensity to develop a cataract as a result of a metabolic condition such as Galactosemia. Other cataracts may be acquired following ocular trauma, radiation, inflammation or following administration of corticosteroids. The indications for the IOL on children vary with both unilateral and bilateral cataract. The relative contradictions for paediatric IOL implantation are microphthalmia, microcornea, glaucoma, inflammation. Secondary IOL implantation in children is also common. Early identification and prompt surgical treatment of pediatric cataracts followed by prescription of accurate optical correction and amblyopia treatment will ensure the best visual result.
