Abstract

Any infection that is passed from one person to another during unprotected sex is called a sexually transmitted disease. Sexually transmitted infection can sometimes be painful or the symptoms can disappear after the initial signs. If left untreated can get into the blood stream and cause serious damage to your body like infertility or even death in rare cases. Person must be on guard continually against possible infection. Sexually Transmitted Disease constitutes a major health problem in India. It is one of the greatest scourges ever to hit the human race. Within a short time the disease had spread like a plague. It is a dangerous venereal disease. The germ are transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact, in few cases it is acquired through contaminated material and even through injections or blood transfusions, if the germs are present in the blood. If a mother is infected the germ finds their way into the child’s body before birth. Over 20 pathogens have been found to be spreading STD. They are known as syphilis, gonorrhea, chancroid, lyphogranuloma, venerum and donovanosis. Due to sexually transmitted infections patients can get infections such as Urethitis, Cervicitis, Epididymitis, Salpingitis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Neonatal conjunctivitis, Genital herpes, Genital and anal Warts, AIDS, Vaginitis. Many of the patients go unnoticed and the true incidence never comes to know due to inadequate reporting and secrecy that surrounds them. The highest rates of incidence are observed in young people who are in sexually active age. The most serious morbidity is observed during foetal development and in the neonate. To control some infections we need to have sero- epidemiological survey, it becomes difficult as cases remain hidden and they do not come to surface. Health education is very important to help and motivate the individual to alter their behaviour. To take Social welfare measures, as sexually transmitted disease is a social problem.
