Abstract

Rabies is one of the worst diseases known to man. Rabies also known as hydrophobia is an acute, highly fatal viral disease of the CNS. It is a primary a disease of warm-blooded animals such as dogs, cats, jackals and wolves. It is transmitted to man usually by bites or licks of rabid animals. There is a change in behaviour in rabid dog that becomes ferocious and bits any object. Attacks and bite without provocation. The animal runs away from home and bites all that comes in his way. It is gasping for breath; there is a change of voice that is barks in a hoarse voice. Despite intensive care person who developed rabies ends in death. Water appears to be the most effective natural barrier to rabies. In many countries rabies is spreading in spite of great advances in research of field control methods. Available anti-rabies vaccines many not be effective against the rabies related viruses. The virus is excreted in the saliva of affected animals. Morbidity is nearly 100%. The number of deaths are much more then reported. Rabies occurs in all parts of India. This infection is transferred from wild life to domestic dogs. A single rabid dog is capable of biting a large number of humans under this infection. Cats can also be source of human infection. Wild life rabies fox, hyena, bat rabies—these bats feed exclusively on the blood of animals and man the virus may be present in the saliva for 3-4 days, before the onset of clinical symptoms and during the course of illness till death. 80% of bites by proven rabid animals will result in rabies. Person-to-person it is found rare. The incubation depends on the site of the bite, severity of bite, number of wounds, amount of virus injected, species of the biting animal, exposure of bite face, head, neck, upper extremities and bites by wild animals. Today only 3 persons on record who have been stricken with rabies have survived. Diagnosis made on basis of history, signs and symptoms skin biopsy, virus isolated from saliva, serum and CSF taken before 8th day. There is no specific treatment for rabies only case management once rabies developed. Those who are bitten by a suspected animal prophylaxis of vaccine are given to neutralize virus before it can enter the nervous system. Every exposure treated as medical emergency. Rabies vaccine is unique because it is the only vaccine that is given after exposure to infection. Anti-rabies injection should be given to all pets.
