Act like a postage stamp, stick to one thing until you get there. We are far behind the developed world standers. We need to go many miles ahead. To reaches the plenitude of life. To give power to the poor, and instill Hope in their lives, liberate them from forces of evil. The sign of the times are frightening. Many parts of the country are under the grip of severe drought and floods, natural calamities, global warming. Failure in the monsoon or heavy rain falls and rise cost of essential commodities will mean further hardships for the poor who are living below the magical line. These coming years are not going to be easy. Income is less and expenses are increasing. We have already begun to sip the bitter cup that awaits those who dare squarely to face injustice. Obstruction and objections may have to be faced, but they are the challenge and this is the task ahead of us. How do we see these above-mentioned challenges around us? How do we respond? It is heartening to watch India’s quest for becoming an information technology upper power getting realized slowly but steadily. Lot of importance is being given to this area, with huge investments in human and material resources. But a major concern exists as to how far these developments will help the nation surge forward in other directions as well. Will the country accord similar attention to the social development sector also? These are very pertinent questions because; ultimately this progress has to be instrumental in improving the quality of life of the people, not a handful, but everyone. Do our current national priorities oriented towards this goal? Available health indicators are, unfortunately, not too affirmative. It may be an indication of further deterioration in public health care standards, despite massive efforts, may have dangerous portents for future. We need policies to spur the nation to break the shackles of the vicious circle that exists between poverty, inequity, poor health and the precarious access to health services. We have to make our intervention.
