Abstract

Cartilage is a promising graft material to close tympanic membrane perforations as well as for ossiculoplasty. Superior results can be obtained by using sliced cartilage of appropriate thickness (comparable to that of Temporalis Fascia: 0.1-0.3 mm). Cartilage graft resists deformation and prevents retraction, re-perforation even in the milieu of Eustachian tube dysfunction. Due to its obvious advantages, Tragal cartilage has been exclusively used in our Otological practice not only for tympanic membrane and ossicular reconstruction but also for attic reconstruction. The photographs of the preoperative perforation and the post operative graft demonstrate the consistent and long-term results of cartilage.
