Serous otitis media is also known as non suppurative otitis media, exudative otitis media or simply ‘glue ear’. It is described as a condition of the middle ear in which the mucosal lining shows chronic inflammatory change and a sterile effusion occurs. The effusion may be thin in consistency, but is usually thick and sticky. The color of the tympanic membrane varies from dull red to straw or amber colored to slate or inky blue. The contours of the membrane are also altered. Many drums may even show retraction pockets, particularly in the attic or in the posterior quadrant.
