It can be said that this is the most favourite topic of the author. The chapter elegantly segregates all the orofacial functions and explains the maturation of one particular function from infantile tot eh adult stage. That which is normal during infancy may be abnormal during adulthood, e.g. suckling reflex is designed to allow an infant to nourish itself during the initial stages of life. It is a swallow pattern with the tongue intervening between the gum pads. The transition from the infantile pattern to the adult pattern is very subtle and subclinical. At certain stages, the child may have both infantile and adult pattern of the same function. When a clinician notices an abnormal function, it is his duty to reason out the etiology for the abnormality before devising a treatment plan. We have to treat both abnormal form and function. This chapter would enlighten the young minds on the important maturational events of oral functions.
