Abstract

Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) is characterized by cough, dyspnea and nocturnal wheezing; diffuse reticulonodular infiltrates in chest X-rays and marked peripheral blood eosinophilia. The histopathological study in TPE had shown widely scattered nodules of varying sizes (1–5 mm) over the lung surface. The TPE is a systemic disease involving mainly the lungs, but other organs such as liver, spleen, lymph nodes, brain, gastrointestinal tract, etc. may also be involved. The efficacy of organic arsenicals in the treatment of TPE was reported by Weingarten. Because of persistent mild interstitial lung disease and high relapse rates in TPE, it has been recommended that repeated monthly courses of diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) at 2-3 monthly intervals for a period of 1-2 years may be useful.
