Abstract

Smokers appear to have more severe colds than non smokers. Smokers had a statistically significant greater likelihood of having a lower respiratory tract illness (57% vs 45%), a longer duration of cough (8.9 vs 6.8 days), and a greater frequency of abnormal auscultatory findings (31% vs 20%) than nonsmokers. Among the risk factors for upper respiratory illness (URTI) in children, the most important are: (a) Socioeconomic conditions. (b) Staying at day care centers. (c) Passive smoking. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide and has the highest mortality rate among all cancers. Almost 87 to 90% of lung cancer cases are attributable to cigarette smoking and smokers are 22 times more likely to die from lung cancer than nonsmokers.
