Abstract

The term, polysomnography (PSG), was derived in 1974 from the Greek word “poly,” meaning many, the Latin word “somnus,” meaning sleep, and the Greek word “graphein” meaning to write. It refers to the multiple tests performed on a patient during sleep in order to evaluate sleep disorders. It generally includes recording of EEG, electro-oculogram (EOG), EMG, oro-nasal airflow, electro-cardiogram (ECG), thoracic and abdominal movements, body position, snoring, oxyhemoglobin saturation and leg movements.
