Abstract

Cancer is one of the major threats to public health in the developed world and increasingly in the developing world. Oropharyngeal cancer is more common in developing countries than developed countries. Oral cancer term includes cancers of lip, tongue, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and pharynx. Premalignant lesions and conditions such as leukoplakia and erythroplakia can precede the development of malignancies. Early detection of oral cancer is often quite possible. Complete oral examination along with biopsy and oral cytology procedures can help in early detection of oral cancers, which can dramatically reduce deaths and improve the survival rates. Prevention of oral cancer is focused towards modifying risk behaviors. This chapter describes the epidemiology and trends of oral cancer, its causes, pathogenesis, pathological types, diagnostic evaluation, and early detection and prevention.
