Abstract

Standard methodology for the collection of epidemiological data on oral health has been designed by World Health Organization (WHO) and used by countries worldwide for the surveillance of oral disease and health. Surveys are undertaken for the identification of health problems, description of the health status and health needs of the population, estimation of the prevalence and distribution of health indicators, analysis of social (in) equality in health and access to health services, study of healthcare consumption and its determinants, as well as preventive care, study of possible trends in health status, lifestyle and health care services consumption among the population. Survey can be called as a non-experimental investigation. This investigation must be conducted using a scientific methodology which is discussed in this chapter. Basic Oral Health surveys including their organization, implementation, assessment form, post survey action and preparation of survey reports are described in detail to enable dental students develop the knowledge and skills required to undertake oral health survey procedures.
