Abstract

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. The present chapter highlights the principles, strategies and methods of oral health promotion. There are different approaches to health promotion which show the diversities of ways of working within health promotion. Health education, prevention and health protection, form the three essential elements of health promotion. In addition, the global oral health goals for the year 2020 are described here. The magnitude of the oral health problems in India, the status of oral health care delivery and the development and implementation strategies of National Oral Health Care Programs are discussed here. Additional measures required to improve oral health status and delivery of oral health services in India include continuing dental education programs, the role of dental colleges, strategies of oral health care in urban areas, implementation of primary preventive package through the school health schemes, reorientation of dental education in India, involvement off the other rallied departments and the set-up of National Institute of Dental Research and Training center.
