Abstract

School health services contribute to goals of both the education system and the health care system. Coordinated school health programs offer the opportunity to provide the services and knowledge necessary to enable children to be productive learners and to develop the skills to make health decisions for the rest of their lives. The aim of this chapter is to outline the components of a comprehensive school health program model so as to enable the reader to understand the suggested core health services that every school health program should provide. WHO has advocated the development of “Health Promoting Schools” and the WHO Oral Health Program has prepared an oral health technical document to strengthen the implementation of an oral health component of the Health Promoting Schools program. This chapter further provides an insight into the school-based dental health programs. Relevant examples from ongoing school oral health programs in various countries are given.
