Abstract

An accurate assessment of the patient’s oral status in relative immunity or susceptibility to caries could be used daily in the education of patients and could aid dentists during their planning and supervision of treatment. This could be done by various caries activity and caries susceptibility tests. Caries activity refers to the increment of active lesions over a stated period of time. It is a measure of the speed of progression of a carious lesion. Caries susceptibility means the susceptibility of a tooth to a caries-producing environment. It refers to the inherent tendency of the host and the target tissue (tooth) to be afflicted by carious process. This chapter explains the various caries activity tests, their objectives and advantages.
