Abstract

The caries process is now well understood; much of it has been described extensively in the dental literature. Some details of the caries process remain to be unravelled, but, in general, we understand the process well enough to initiate better targeted methods of caries prevention and intervention. Prevention, intervention, and reversal of dental caries can be enhanced by either reducing the pathological factors or enhancing the protective factors. Methods of prevention for dental caries are based on three principles, which include increasing the resistance of teeth by use of fluorides, sealants and saliva substitute; combating caries-inducing micro-organisms/plaque removal and control; and modifying the diet. Public health strategies for prevention of dental caries, achieving the balance between pathological and protective factors in the caries process, targeting the risk groups and description of levels of prevention for dental caries are described in this chapter.
