Tooth wear can be separated into Attrition, Abrasion, Erosion and Abfraction. Tooth wear, especially tooth erosion is an increasingly recognized clinical problem. The causes of tooth wear may be intrinsic or extrinsic and are usually chemical (acidic) or mechanical (frictional) in nature. This chapter describes the various types of tooth wear, their etiology, risk factors and prevalence. Strategies for preventing tooth wear are largely based on the individual. Methods for prevention of tooth wear, such as fluoride, drink and diet modification, increasing salivary flow, treatment of conditions leading to gastric reflux, lifestyle changes and restorative procedures are discussed in this chapter.
