Abstract

There are two types of ossification centers, primary and secondary. A primary ossification center is the initial area of a bone development in the central part of each developing bone. In long bones the primary centers occur in the shaft. It usually appears during prenatal period. A secondary ossification center is the area of ossification that appears after the primary ossification center has appeared and they appear during the postnatal period. Ossification centers help in assessing the age as ossification centers appear at different ages and they fuse to the adjacent bones at various ages. Illustrated diagrams with meticulously labeled ossification centers are provided. Tables show ossification centers for shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee and foot.
