Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common infectious disease in the world. Vertebral tuberculosis affects 1-2% of those harboring TB infections. Vertebral tuberculosis is the most common form of skeletal TB. Lower thoracic and upper lumbar bodies are more commonly involved. Pain is the most common presenting symptom; 10-40% have neurological deficits. Involvement of disc space or psoas abscess suggests tuberculosis. Diagnosis is frequently not suspected in patients with no evidence of extraspinal tuberculosis. CT guided needle aspiration biopsyis a diagnostic option. Role of surgery continues to be defined. Conservative medical managment is useful in a large segment of cases.
