Abstract

Genetic studies allow diagnosis, prognostic information, counseling of other family members and specific treatments in some cases. This chapter attempts to provide a brief review of the genetics and their current application in neurosurgery, selected from more extensive articles. A detailed discussion is beyond the scope of this chapter. Neurogenetic studies provide genetic testing and consultation for a variety of neurological disorders. They facilitate classification of subgroups and for risk stratification of brain tumor patients. This chapter helps in screening patients for aneurysms in families of patients who have suffered aneurismal SAH. Monogenic causes should be looked for in lacunar stroke with early onset vascular dementia, especially in the young. They may offer new evidence for prevention and novel and minimally invasive therapeutics for this very common disc disease. Genetic studies on developmental disorders are limited and complicated by the multiplicity of genes participating in neurulation and development. For patients with known or suspected genetic disorders, genetic counseling plays a vital role throughout their lives.
