Abstract

Inclusion tumors are a heterogeneous group of hamartomas that arise from tissues displaced during the period of neural tube closure. Inclusion tumors arise from tissue displaced during the period of neural tube closure. An epidermoid lesion contains tissues derived from ectoderm of the embryonic germ layers (3rd and 4th decades). A dermoid has tissues from two germ layers [(ectoderm and mesoderm)—2nd decade]. A teratoma has tissues from all three germ layers [(ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm)—infancy]. Epidermoid is the most common of all and the third most common CPA tumors. Treatment is surgical, preferably complete resection. However, after subtotal resection there is a prolonged period of remission; no role for adjuvant therapy. Aseptic chemical meningitis must be borne in mind postoperatively. Teratomas are neoplastic, whereas the other inclusion tumors are hamartomas.
