Abstract

Growth charts are an essential tool kit for the pediatricians, assisting in determining the degree to which physiological needs for growth and development are being met in childhood. The earlier growth standards, including the NCHS/WHO growth reference (in international use since 1970s), were based on a sample of predominantly formula-fed infants whose pattern of growth is known to deviate substantially from that of healthy breastfed infants. In 2006 and 2007, WHO released new growth standards which replace the former NCHS references as international standards. The first set comprises weight, length, height and BMI by age and sex as well as weight by length and sex. Its aim is to growth monitoring, nutrition screening and surveillance, diagnosis of malnutrition and nutrition research. The second set, comprising head circumference, mid-upper-arm circumference (MUAC), triceps skin-fold thickness (TST) and sub-scapular skin-fold thickness (SSST), aims at assessing various aspects of body composition. The introduction of the WHO child growth standards is expected to have wide implications for growth and nutrition research. The full scope of this effect will gradually become clear while researchers, similar to health care workers, make the transition to using the new standards, re-evaluate results of past approaches, and explore the uses and functional validity (for etiology, diagnosis, and prognosis) of the standards, including for indices that were not available earlier.
