Abstract

Among all hereditary neuromuscular diseases, DMD is the most common. Inmost cases diagnosis is made around 5 years of age when the child’s physical activity regresses markedly. High index of suspicion is critical for diagnosis which is confirmed by massive rise in CPK, electromyography, DNA analysis and muscle biopsy. Prenatal diagnosis is available. Left untreated, the child has to take resort to wheel chair by adolescence. On an average, death occurs around 1 years of age. Common complications pertain to respiration, orthopedic and cardiovascular systems. Though no definitive treatment is available, steroid therapy tends to halt the progression of the muscle weakness. Over and above the supplements like carnitine, myeloblast transfer therapy, embryonic or mesodermal stem cell transplantation and gene therapy are the potential approaches.
