Abstract

Conservative management of intraocular retinoblastoma is complex. It is often achieved by a combination of systemic chemotherapy associated with local treatments (local adjuvant therapy) such as laser therapy, thermotherapy, cryotherapy and plaque radiotherapy to each tumor site (retinal tumor and subretinal seed). The association of chemotherapy and local treatments is also called sequential aggressive local therapy (SALT). Local adjuvant therapy plays an essential role in the management of intraocular retinoblastoma in conjunction with systemic chemotherapy. The choice of local therapy is adapted to the size and location of the retinal tumor and seeds. A combination of different local therapies and several sessions are often needed to obtain tumor control and eye preservation. Local therapy can also be utilized to control small recurrences that are noted after completion of chemotherapy.
