Abstract

The utility of radiation therapy in retinoblastoma has diminished because chemotherapy with focal treatment is considered as first line treatment when indicated. Conventional external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) has been used as primary treatment for well over 3 decades with excellent tumor control. Cumulative incidence of a second malignancy at 50 years after diagnosis was 51% for hereditary retinoblastoma, and 5% for nonhereditary retinoblastoma. Proton beam radiation therapy (PBRT) can cover the target tumor with intensified and uniform dose of radiation with less energy distribution to nontarget surrounding normal tissue. PBRT for retinoblastoma is expected not only to increase cure rate but also to reduce second malignant neoplasm, facial deformity and other adverse effects. If radiation therapy for retinoblastoma is indicated, PBRT may be considered in place of conventional EBRT
