Abstract

Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world and also a common site for metastatic disease. Pain occurs during the chest wall involvement, pleural disease mesotheliomas, metastatic disease and diaphragmatic involvement. Cough, loss of appetite, weight loss and fatigue, bone pain, dull ache and neuropathic pain are the signs or symptoms of cancer. Diagnosis is done so as to identify the pain mechanism and make proper management plan on the basis of patient’s condition and available resources. Various scan (CT scan, MRI scan, bone scans and PET scans), ultrasonogram, chest X-ray and blood tests are used for the investigation purpose. Several treatments (simple analgesics like paracetamol, ibuprofen, and NSAIDs, opioids like tramadol or codeine phosphate, morphine and oxycodone, PPI like omeprazole or lansoprazole, anticonvulsants like gabapentin or pregabalin and antidepressants like amitriptyline, nortriptyline and duloxetine) are used for the lung pain. To ensure whether the symptoms are controlled properly and also monitoring the potential side effects, the followed-up advice is required based on the stage of the disease.
