Metastases in the bones are a common condition encountered in oncology practice. Bone metastases are relatively less regular in patients with gastrointestinal tumors, lymphomas and other hematologic malignancies. It can be classified as osteolytic, osteoblastic, or mixed. Resorption of bone is done by the activated osteoclasts whereas bone formation at the same site is done by osteoblasts. Bone metastases are rarely clinically silent. Pain, bone fracture and spinal cord compression are the clinical features of bone metastases. Other symptoms like anemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, anorexia, weight loss, weakness and fatigue are also responsible for the infection. Laboratory tests and radiographic examination (plain X-ray, CT scan, MRI, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, bone scan and PET scans) are used for the diagnosis of the infection. Several therapies i. e. pain management therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, systemic radioisotope pharmaceutical therapy medical therapy and surgical therapy are used in the treatment of the metastatic bone pain.
