Physiotherapy deals with restoration or maintenance of the human function and movement utilizing physical agents, such as heat, light, sound, etc. along with exercises and manual therapy techniques. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in the management of chronic pain relief. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary for the patients prior to treatment plan which includes laboratory and radiological findings and assessment by various disciplines. Relief of pain, prevention of contractures and deformity, maintaining the range of motion and strength and optimizing functional abilities to premorbid levels are the goals involved in the treatment of chronic pain. Short-wave diathermy, ultrasound, cryotherapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, TENS, interferential current and LASER are the common electrotherapeutic modalities used in pain relief by physiotherapists. EMG Biofeedback uses audio-visual signals to provide a feedback of physiological function. Monochromatic infrared photo energy (MIRE) and extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) are the advanced modalities that are emerging and scientists are studying their safety and efficacy.
