Abstract

The cause of the pain can be determined by various techniques that are presently available. The most common pain is back pain and therefore spinal MR imaging is an important investigation in the work-up of back pain. Degenerative spinal diseases illustrates about lumbar spine, MR imaging of normal disk and disk pathologies, and degenerative pathologies other than disk. The disk degeneration and herniation mechanism of cervical region and lumbar spine are similar to each other. Apart from these, the degenerative changes in the diskovertebral complex and the apophyseal joint can also cause severe pain and radiculopathy. Many causes are there for solitary vertebral collapse including trauma, tumor, and infection. The spinal tumors are classified into intramedullary spinal tumors, extramedullary-intradural spinal tumors, and extradural tumors. The important cause of back pain is spinal infection that involves the vertebra and the adjacent disk. The MRI in postoperative spinal pain and chronic abdominal pain are briefly illustrated. CT scan can better assess cortical bone where as the marrow pathologies are better assessed by MRI.
