Abstract

Dermatologists are increasingly performing cutaneous surgery. The surgeries performed range from simple procedures like electrosurgery, biopsies, chemical cauteries, sclerotherapy, soft tissue augmentation, botulinum toxin chemodenervation to more aggressive surgeries such as vitiligo surgery, nail surgeries and more complex labor intensive procedures like hair restoration, liposuction, etc. Since patient’s safety is the first concern, it is not only the dermatologist skill which matters but also the infrastructure. A well-equipped, well-designed surgical suite improves the experience for both patients and the dermatologist. A dermatosurgical procedure is deemed successful if there is aseptic wound healing, surgery was painless with minimal blood loss. To achieve this, one has to have a clean, unobstructed work place which is easy to disinfect and in some situations sterilize. This place should have good set of instruments, advanced life support with good lighting. To achieve this, World Health Organization calls for ‘sober down to earth planning and design’ of theater. Operation theater should not be viewed as a luxury but in reality, it is a place of high standard of patient safety with most economical use of manpower and other resources. In this chapter, discuss about the setting up a dermatosurgery unit. There are three types of dermatosurgery zone: Unrestricted zone, Restricted zone and Laser surgery unit.
