Abstract

Dermatosurgical practice involves procedures that are performed mostly in outpatient settings and some procedures performed exclusively in Operation Theater. In dermatological surgery adverse events in the form of infections are not common, but the potential for nosocomial infections does exist. The rates of postoperative infections tend to be low, but have been documented to be ranging from 0.2 to 3.5%. Superficial infections occur essentially as a result of breach in the laid down and advocated standard infection control practices. Disinfection and sterilization constitute the foundation and core of standard infection control practices. Maintenance of strict asepsis is essential to minimize postoperative infections and their consequences. Awareness about these practices and principles is of great importance as dermatosurgeons today perform increasing number of procedures. This is particularly so, since many of these procedures are esthetic procedures with possible medicolegal implications. Disinfection and sterilization are very important concepts in ensuring safe surgery. World Health Organization has recently commenced a “safe surgery” initiative to help reduce risks involved in surgeries around the world by adhering to proven standards of care. WHO advocates use of a “Surgical Safety Checklist” prior to operative procedure. That the use of checklists significantly reduces the surgical morbidity and mortality has been documented after pilot studies conducted by WHO.
